MARKETING

This provides sustainable livelihoods & empowerment to small and marginal farmers and women in Nilgiris by developing a community enterprise for economic and ecological benefits.
It would be supported by a Producer Company for value added products.

In 2008 an FAO programme was initiated with Earth Trust for farmers to increase biodiversity by inter cropping aromatic & medicinal plants within the existing organic context.

ACTION FOR CHANGE

Now we have a solid base with the Biodynamic Organic Growers Association in Nilgiris (BiOGAiN)- a group of farmers committed to the organic & BD concept.

Online documentation for an internal control system has been set up. The Producer Company is awaiting high enough production levels to justify its formation.

We are developing sound, locally sustainable systems serving the local communities' nutritional needs with plans for further value addition to increase local incomes. Sustainable systems based on local resources- biogas/solar/ wind & water technologies- will also be important for the future.

To support the farmers, a small portable distillation unit has been obtained for distilling essential oils obtained from the aromatic herbs which are being introduced & integrated into the organic farming systems. Technical expertise will be shared with the farmers so that the value addition can come under the Producer Company concept for increasing incomes for the small & marginal farmers.

BiOGAiN recently opened a shop for organic foods & materials in Ootacamund with the support of the Earth Trust who, together with the farmers, have worked out an innovative & stable pricing system, related to a reasonable, guaranteed profit. Products are sold within a closed, ethical marketing system to buyers who share the same vision.

We are encouraging communities to ensure food security at home in the villages first before selling surpluses outside. It is important that organic food is not just a food for rich people.

If you are interested in being part of this initiative, helping to support the work we are doing, sharing the turning of things, we are registered with FCRA (No.075901221) in India to receive funds from overseas - or if you are in UK, you can contact our funding organisation :
